Lucha Libre- Adventures in Cozumel
Our family cruises quite a lot with our sons cruising, with us at least once a year. We have been to Cozumel probably a dozen times and got to the point where we thought we had seen it all. Until recently, when docked at Cozumel we would get off the ship to get a frosty beverage or cheap beer and then get right back on the ship. For our cruise in October of 2024, however, we saw a new excursion pop up for Cozumel, and we were very intrigued. It is called Lucha Libre and comes with the tagline: Embrace the Legendary Mexican Lucha Libre Experience in Cozumel.
Without really knowing much about it, we booked it for our family not only because we knew it would be an unforgettable experience (good or bad), but also because our youngest, John, is really into wrestling. There are a variety of packages you can sign up for that come with different extras to go along with the show. The Classic Package includes a welcome tequila, the Tacos and Margaritas package comes with, well, tacos and margaritas, and the Meet and Greet Package includes an opportunity to meet, ask questions and take a photo with the wrestlers. If booking through the cruise line, all of the excursions include a 5-minute van ride to and from the pier.
We decided to go with the Meet and Greet Package, and (spoiler alert) we really enjoyed it. It was quite the production, in the cheesiest, most awesome way possible. Even the referee did tricks and moves, and all of the wrestlers took their roles very seriously. We saw three one-one-one matches and then one where the wrestlers tag teamed. Aside from the amazingly fun personas that each wrestler had, their ability to interact with the audience was really great. Even the “bad guys” were hard to hate because the whole thing was so entertaining.
After the show, everyone left the arena except for those of us there for the meet and greet. We learned a lot about the wrestlers: how much they train, how they came up with their personas, how long they have been doing it and we even learned that one of the wrestlers had been in the Olympics. John and the other kids had the opportunity to ask whatever silly question they wanted to ask and the wrestlers handled it like pros. Afterwards we got a photo taken with the whole crew (which they then sold to us in this really ridiculously cheesy yet awesome frame).
The facility where the show takes place also includes some shops a seating area for eating those tacos and drinking those margaritas, which you can order even without having that package, and this outdoor garden area. After a while of wandering around drinking margaritas and shopping, we got in a van and headed back to the pier.
Would we recommend this experience? We absolutely would and especially to families. Would we do it again or is it a one and done? We are very curious if every season we would be able to see new wrestlers with different tricks or if every show is the same. And, we are very curious if booking it through the cruise line is much better than booking it directly. Is it worth it to have transportation set up for you? Or, can you save some money and find your own way to the facility? We will be back in Cozumel later this year so perhaps we will find out.
