From Someone Who's Been There
After years of cruising and helping hundreds of families plan their perfect voyages, I've put together the tips I give every single client. Bookmark this page -- you'll come back to it.
Choosing the Right Cruise
- Budget (can be a range) -- cruises are largely all-inclusive but extras add up
- Destination -- Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, or river cruise?
- Travel dates -- school breaks vs. off-season savings
- Ship size -- mega ship with waterparks vs. intimate boutique
- Cruise line -- family-friendly, luxury, adults-only?
- Length -- 3-night sampler vs. 14-night grand voyage
What to Pack
- Formal night outfits (most ships have 1-2)
- Sunscreen (buy before boarding -- it's expensive onboard)
- Lanyard for your sea pass card
- Power strip (no surge protector) for the cabin
- Comfortable walking shoes for port days
- Motion sickness remedies just in case
- Reusable water bottle
- A light cardigan -- ships keep dining rooms cold
Dining Tips
- Book specialty restaurants as soon as you board -- they fill up fast
- Main dining room is included and often excellent
- The buffet is open late if you need a snack after shows
- Room service is usually free for breakfast
- Ask your waiter's name on night one -- they'll remember you
- Specialty coffee is not usually included -- bring a small budget for it
Making the Most of Shore Excursions
- Book through the cruise line for peace of mind (if the ship leaves, they wait for you)
- Independent tours are often cheaper -- research TripAdvisor
- Water excursions book up fast -- reserve in advance
- Leave time to just explore the port on your own
- Keep your sea pass card and a small amount of cash handy
- Be back at the ship at least 30 minutes before departure -- not 5 minutes
Saving Money
- Book early or last-minute -- both can offer deals
- Watch for “kids sail free” promotions on Royal Caribbean
- Drink packages can save money if you drink 5+ beverages per day
- Specialty dining packages bought before sailing are cheaper
- Ask your travel agent (that's me!) to monitor price drops after booking
- Onboard credit from booking promos goes a long way
Frequently Asked Questions
The base fare includes your stateroom, main dining, most entertainment, and use of pools and facilities. Extras like specialty dining, drinks, spa, shore excursions, and gratuities are typically additional.
I strongly recommend it. A good policy covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies at sea, and missed connections. I can help you find the right coverage.
Modern cruise ships are very stable. Most people never feel a thing. If you're concerned, talk to your doctor before sailing and pack Dramamine or Sea-Bands just in case.
For peak times (summer, holidays, spring break), 6-12 months ahead. For off-peak sailings, 3-6 months is usually fine. Last-minute deals exist but availability is limited.
Absolutely. Royal Caribbean and many other lines have outstanding kids' programs from age 6 months up. Some of the best family memories are made at sea.
