The Sushi Making Class
Since we were not purchasing the Ultimate Dining Package and we had never done it before, we decided to give the Sushi Making Class a try. We arrived right at 10AM, were asked to wash our hands and then we were seated with a group at one of the hibachi tables. All of the ingredients were already laid out in front of us. We had to sign a health and safety waiver and we were asked to put on a hat and gloves. We were ready to learn and eventually eat.
Shortly after, the sushi chef, Ikadek, came out to start teaching us how to make sushi. We learned about the rice and how it is prepared and the rest of the ingredients sitting in front of us were identified to us. Ikadek walked us through how to make 2 maki rolls (1 Shrimp Tempura roll and 1 Spicy Tuna roll), 1 Temaki roll or a hand roll, and 2 Shrimp Nigiri. Ikadek was really good at explaining the exact technique required to make our sushi not only look good but taste good. After he cut the rolls for us, we dressed the rolls with BBQ sauce, spicy mayo and chili pepper. He guided us through how to plate it all so that it looks like what you would get at an actual sushi restaurant. And, after that, we got to eat it and it was a lot of sushi and quite tasty.
At its price point, this activity had a lot of value for us. We like sushi and we typically will order it at Izumi so, in a way, this was like a 2 for 1 deal. We had a fun activity and a delicious lunch all for $35. We also got to interact with some other couples on the cruise, which was an added bonus. I am bummed that we missed the top tier event that was scheduled at the same time, but all in all we are very happy with the experience.
Would we do it again? If we were going on a cruise with someone who had never done it, we would definitely encourage them to do it with us as it would be a good activity to do with friends. If it were just us again, we would probably opt to just make a reservation for lunch at Izumi. No regrets that we did it though.
